Course 810 AN INTRODUCTION TO VISUAL ART (Level 2)

This course will fulfill the freshman Fine & Performing Arts requirement. (One Semester) Balanced with a study of art history, students in this course will be introduced to the foundations of art as understood through the Elements and Principles of Design. Students are encouraged to explore the expressive potential of the creative process. Individual and group work will enhance the student's understanding of art while different media are explored. This study of art will include and be assessed through conceptual, cognitive and creative processes. Students are encouraged to develop artistic habits and strive for portfolio quality pieces.

Course 812 AN INTRODUCTION TO THEATER ARTS (Level 2)

This course will fulfill the freshman Fine and Performing Arts requirement. (One Semester) This one-semester course introduces students to basic performance techniques through exercises in improvisation, pantomime, voice and diction. Students will also gain an understanding of dramatic structure, genres and theater history through textbook readings and hands-on applications of the performance techniques. Through a broad study of theater, students have the opportunity to develop skills in ensemble building, trust, self-confidence, concentration, imagination and creativity.

Course 850 DRAMA I (Level 2)

This course is open to juniors and seniors. (2 Semesters) Students in this course will study dramatic literature and come to understand how it serves as a foundation for performance. This course is a look into not only how a play serves as a foundation to performance, but also how these works function in history, society, along with how these plays function today through a careful study of the playwright, societal commentary, performance on stage, groups discussion and lectures. This will be accomplished through directed improvisation, language and movement work, monologue study, memorization and crafting a character, script and set design, analytical and creative writing, as well as research and development.

Course 851 ADVANCED PLACEMENT STUDIO ART (Level AP)

This course is open to juniors and seniors. A fee of $150.00 for materials is associated with this course. Selection into this course is based on a review of recent and original student artwork, a written statement of purpose and an interview with Ms Shaw. Timely and satisfactory completion of summer work is required. This intensive and demanding course is best suited for those students who are highly motivated and committed to developing their interests in visual art for the purpose of college enrollment in a fine arts program. Students will be assessed quarterly based on their progress in creative and conceptual skills as expressed in art production, essays and written exams. Students must submit a portfolio of work for evaluation at the end of the school year. Each portfolio requires 24 slides of original work along with one written commentary. Each portfolio is developed in three sections: Quality, Concentration and Breadth. Portfolios are mailed to and formally evaluated by the College Board, AP Program.

Course 852 STUDIO ART (Level 2)

This course is open to juniors and seniors. A fee of $150.00 for materials is associated with this course. This course offers a medley of art experiences through the application of various arts media (including but not limited to drawing, painting, sculpture, 2-D and 3-D design and architectural models. A review of the Elements and Principles of Design will be included throughout the year as well as a study of art history. This study of art will include and be assessed through conceptual, cognitive and creative processes. Students are encouraged to develop artistic habits and strive for portfolio quality pieces.

Course 853 DRAWING/PAINTING I (Level 2)

This course is open to juniors and seniors. A fee of $150.00 is associated with this course. This course is structured in two general phases. The 1st semester focuses primarily on the fundamentals of academic drawing. Considerable time is dedicated to instruction for the self portrait and study of the human figure. The second semester will shift toward basic issues of painting. Both small and large-scale paintings will be achieved exhibiting a variety of themes. A review of the Elements and Principles of Design will be included throughout the year as well as a study of art history. This study will include and be assessed through conceptual, cognitive and creative processes. Students are encouraged to develop artistic habits and strive for portfolio quality pieces.

Course 854 Photography (Level 2)

This one semester course is open to juniors and seniors. A fee of $75.00 is associated with this course. Students are required to own or have access to a 35mm Manual SLR Camera. A limited number of cameras are available through the department. Students who enroll in this course must also enroll in Printmaking (Course 855). No previous photographic experience is necessary for this course. Instruction will include the use of the camera and darkroom printing. Material will be presented through lectures, demonstrations and workshops. Emphasis will be placed on developing technical skill through exploratory assignments, references to historical and contemporary uses of photography, lessons on current photographers and issues and experimentation with materials and techniques. Students should also be prepared to use the darkroom and print outside of class time. A review of the Elements and Principles of Design will be included throughout the year. This study of art will include and be assessed through conceptual, cognitive and creative processes. Students are encouraged to develop artistic habits and strive for portfolio quality pieces.

Course 855 Printmaking (Level 2)

This one semester course is open to juniors and seniors. A fee of $50.00 is associated with this course. Students who enroll in this course must also be enrolled in Photography (Course 854). Printmaking is an introductory course applying design and printing skills employed/used in the following printing operations: monoprinting, relief and etching. Material will be presented through lectures, demonstrations and workshops. Emphasis will be placed on the technical processes of printmaking, creative expression and performance and an understanding of art history. A review of the Elements and Principles of Design will be included throughout the year. This study of art will include and be assessed through conceptual, cognitive and creative processes. Students are encouraged to develop artistic habits and strive for portfolio quality pieces.

Course 895 BAND

This enrichment course is open to freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors and will be offered three days a week from 7:00 a.m. - 8:05 a.m. Students who enroll in and successfully complete the course will be awarded 0.5 credits. A special sign-up process is required for this course. Music is the universal language spoken by all peoples throughout the world. Led by a professional musician and experienced band director, the concert band and pep band at CCHS invites students of all musical abilities to participate in the program. . The band performs at two concerts during the school year and at a variety of athletic events. Subsidies are available for the rental of instruments.

Course 899 CHORUS

This enrichment course is open to freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors and will be offered three days a week from 7:00 a.m. - 7:45 a.m. Students who enroll in and successfully complete the course will be awarded 0.5 credits. A special sign-up process is required for this course. This course will teach students who enjoy singing, the basic skills of correct breathing, vocal production, articulation and sight-reading. Students will also study various musical styles and composers. Preparation of music for performance is a major part of the course. Participation in concerts and various programs, and extra rehearsals as needed, will be required.
