• The Cambridge History of English and American Literature - "Considered the most important work of literary history and criticism ever published, the Cambridge History contains over 303 chapters and 11,000 pages, with essay topics ranging from poetry, fiction, drama and essays to history, theology and political writing. The set encompasses a wide selection of writing on orators, humorists, poets, newspaper columnists, religious leaders, economists, Native Americans, song writers, and even non-English writing, such as Yiddish and Creole."

• The Poetry and Literature Center of the Library of Congress
  A celebration of poetry and the poet laureates rather than a huge digital archive. There is some audio, plus a link to the excellent Bily Collins' project Poetry 180.
• Poet's Corner
  A collection of full text poems, written between the 16th century and 1925. While this site will not replace a good anthology, it does offer a broad spectrum of poets and poetical styles for browsing.
• Representative Poetry On-line  - anthology of English poetry, ranging from poets as well known as Keats to lesser known poets.

  Same as print version of Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, 10th ed. (1919) but the 11,000 entries are searchable by keyword.

• Argos Limited Area Search Engine
  Searches only scholarly sites about the Ancient World. Links to other helpful Internet locations. Try TOCS-IN, a project which "archives the tables of contents of over 150 journals of interest to classicists."
• Bulfinch's Mythology
  Full text selection from "Bulfinch's Mythology." Text is being added on a continual basis and is searchable. If you are looking for the full version of this work, try Ref 292 B87m, in the Garver Room.
• Encyclopedia Mythica
  Online encyclopedia of mythology, folklore and legend contains over 5000 entries. Search engine provides access to specific topics, also contains a browse list, a "what's new" category, illustrations and graphics.
• Folklore and Mythology Electronic Texts
  While not as extensive as "Bulfinch's Mythology" (see above), this site contains extensive and diverse full text folk tales and myths. The site lacks overall organization, but its coverage makes up for this flaw. (It utilizes the Aarne-Thompson tale types for some identification.)
• Geoffrey Chaucer
  An extensive scholarly site from Harvard University, there is much here on the life of the Middle Ages as well as information on Chaucer and his works.

  This journal from the Fairleigh-Dickinson University Psychology Department has mostly abstracts, but full text is "coming soon." See the librarian for interlibrary loan in the meantime.
• American Psychological Association

• Catholic Encyclopedia
  This is the 1913 edition of the Catholic Encyclopedia, no longer under copyright. Transcribed by Kevin Knight and a worldwide group of volunteers. Topics are listed alphabetically. If you need an update and complete version, a newer edition is available in the Garver (Reference) Room, call number R203 N42.
• Exploring Religions
  A guide to exploring various world religions from the University of Wyoming. Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism are covered in depth.
• Finding God in Cyberspace
  Once again, librarians prove they know best at organizing resources. Dr. John L. Gresham focuses on the academic with detailed lists of scholarly gateway sites.
• Internet Sacred Text Archive
  "This site is a freely available non-profit archive of electronic texts about religion, mythology, legends and folklore, and occult and esoteric topics. Texts are presented in English translation and, in some cases, in the original language." A huge and carefully documented archive, some pages are hard to read due to the black background and white text.
• Maven
  This "Portal Directory to the Jewish World" has religious, cultural, news and media links.
• NT Gateway
  An interesting annotated gateway site on topics relating to the bible, biblical scripture, and scholarly writings on religion. While the site offers a search engine, it is also possible to search through the designated topics as they appear on the left side of most pages. Extensive.
• Religion and the Founding of the American Republic
  From the Library of Congress. This site "...explores the role religion played in the founding of the American colonies, in the shaping of early American life and politics, and in forming the American Republic." Contains digitized early American books, manuscripts, letters, prints, paintings, artifacts, and music scores.
• Religious Freedom Page
  Provides text of national, world and UN documents, pertaining to religious rights. Try Resources on Religious Freedom, Religious Persecution Abroad for more information.
• Religious Movements Homepage
  This site is devoted to the understanding of religious and quasi-religious movements. Contains a concise glossary of terms, a search engine and an impressive array of graphics (which seem to lack copyright statements).

• FDA/CFSAN Foodborne Pathogenic Microorganisms and Natural Toxins Handbook
  Widely known as the "Bad Bug Book," this full text guide to diseases from food and treatment is updated often.
• The Biology Project
  An interactive online resource for learning biology.
• Gene Map of the Human Genome
  The same map published in SCIENCE magazine, brings all the research on human genes together in one place. Also try the National Human Genome Research Institute, which directs The Human Genome Project (HGP): "...an international research effort to characterize the genomes of human and selected model organisms through complete mapping and sequencing of their DNA." Search engine provided.

Environment

• Global Climate Changes:
  Two sites track the changes in the earth's climate over the past 130,000 years: the Review and Atlas of Palaeovegetation and the Updated Atlas Maps. These sites track changes, provides extensive maps, detailed descriptions and definitions. These sites link together at various stages.
• Climate Monitoring and Diagnostics Laboratory CMDL is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and "monitors greenhouse gases, aerosols, ozone, ozone-depleting gases and solar and terrestrial radiation at global sites including four Baseline Observatories".
• El Niño Up-to-Date statistical information, including satellite data, on El Niño, as well as oceans (TAO--Tropical Atmosphere Ocean Array), weather and climate.
• Yahoo's Environmental List A complete and direct place to start looking for information.
• Solstice Internet information service of the Center for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technology. Basic categories are: Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy, and Sustainable Living. Case studies of global projects are detailed.
• Environment WWW Virtual Library Subject links (a subject tree, naturally) are Atmosphere, Biosphere, Hydrosphere, Lithosphere, General and Civilization (mostly technological applications), or you can enter search terms or see an alphabetical list. Icons indicate whether there are graphics, movies or sounds on the sites.
• EPA's Acid Rain Program An extensive US Government site including full-text documents.
• OWHL's Environment and Society listing contains many useful gateway links.

• Cephalopod Page 
  An educational page on the Cephalopods, includes an introduction, articles and other places for research.
• Marine Biological Laboratory located at Woods Hole, MA.
• Oceania Project
  The Oceania Project is a non-profit education and research organization dedicated to raising awareness about Cetacea (Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises) and the Ocean Environment.

• Learn Physics Todayl
  A Thinkquest entry which begins with a basic skills in algebra and then has tutorials in mechanics, lights and waves, and electricity in 15 chapters. Each chapter ends with a short quiz. Space Science

• NASA Homepage
   The United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration homepage is unfortunately not as well maintained under the current administration. Researchers can find press releases going back to 1990. Today at NASA has daily updates. Everything else is under "Cool Web Sites" so prepare to browse a little or use the search engine. Use A Space Library  for excellent images and the Solar System Simulator to see the view from a spacecraft.
• ExtraSolar Planets Encyclopedia
  New planets outside our Solar System are cataloged and analyzed at this site by Jean Schneider of the Paris Observatory.

  This University of North Carolina site contains colonial to early 20th Century southern Literature and history including first person narratives. slave narratives, Civil War homefront and church in the southern black community.
• Great American Speeches: 80 Years of Political Oratory
  The website is based on a PBS series, and contains much background material in addition to the speeches which date from the late 1880's through 1999.
• Historical United States Census Data Browser
  The Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research has compiled statistical data from states and counties from 1790 to 1960 from various census data. Select up to 15 fields in categories such as Agriculture, Education and Manufacturing and then click on the Browse Data button on the bottom of the page to make your own data charts.
• The Library of Congress
  Click on American Memory and Exhibitions for links to digitized primary source documents in American History. Includes photos, audio, movies and full text documents. Excellent site to see history come alive. Easy to use keyword search.
• National Archives and Records Administration
  Thousands of digitized primary source documents with more added all the time including recently declassified war documents. Use the Archival Research Catalog the search engine which was formerly called NAIL. You can copy documents and save as images you can see in your web browser.
• Nineteenth Century Documents Project
  Primary source documents from some of the United States most notable events of the 19th century. Includes: editorials, the 1850 Statistical Almanac, civil war documents, letters, transcripts of debates, and a selection of related links for more information.
• POTUS: Presidents of the United States
  Provides background information, election results, cabinet members, and notable events on every US president. Extensive links to historical documents online.
• Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library at Duke University

  Primary Historical Documents From Western Europe. This is a collection comprised of primary Western European documents that are translated, in facsimile, or have been transcribed, from the Middle Ages into this Century.
• The Glory of Byzantium
  New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art prepared this excellent combination of art and history to showcase the Byzantine Empire (approx 324-1453) and its cultural influence. Time lines and teacher resources.
• History Matters
  A gateway site for history resources on the web. Contains a search engine and extensive browsing categories. A good portion of the site is designed for lesson planning, but there are primary source materials and numerous links.
• The History Teacher
  Don't let the wild fonts scare you away. Maintained by Susan Pojer, an AP history teacher, the emphasis here is on primary sources and organization, and it succeeds on both counts. Information here on current conflicts, such as Arab-Israeli Conflict.
• History Resources
  WWW Virtual Library in History from the University of Kansas is the central information server for historians. A valuable place to begin to search in any historical area, including Latin American and Asian studies. Extensive on-line library of full text documents called Carrie.
• Horus' Web Links to History Resources
  This site from the University of California, Riverside is impressive. Use the search engine to find specific historical events.
• Interactive Ancient Mediterranean
  This on-line atlas of the ancient Mediterranean world covers ancient history, geography, archaeology and related fields.
• Internet Medieval Sourcebook
  Part of ORB (see next entry), Fordham University is responsible for this very complete site. There is much here. Take some time to explore the introduction, overviews and help links as you would with any good reference source. Abridged and full-text sources links, plus information on how to cite sources.
• Medieval Technology Pages
  Prof. Paul Gans at NYU has put together information from mostly secondary sources on the inventions in the Middle Ages. Use the subject index or browse the timeline. Note documentation information.
• NETSERF: the Internet connection for medieval resources
  This huge gateway site has an alphabetical subject listing and a search engine. Easy to navigate, you add the critical thinking part.
• ORB--Online Reference Book for Medieval Studies

• Massachusetts Historical Society
  A variety of manuscripts with transcriptions, engravings, maps, online exhibitions and seasonally themed displays makes this a great site to browse as well as search for specific documents. Repository for the Adams Papers.

Nation Building

  Uses Doctor Martha Ballard's A Midwife's Tale: the life of Martha Ballard, based on her diary, 1785-1812 to study primary sources. Use this site to investigate New England history and use of primary sources in research. Makes a fascinating book even more interesting. The award-winning book is in the OWHL collection.
• Monticello: The Home of Thomas Jefferson
  Much more detail here than floor plans, including the daily life on the plantation of both slaves and free workers.

Antebellum/Abolition

• Abolition
  A Library of Congress online exhibition from the African-American Mosaic, this site contains a number of primary sources and links to more information.
• The Amistad Case
  A lesson plan which explores the Amistad Revolt of 1839-1842 through court documents, diaries and other primary sources at the National Archives.
• Documenting the American South
  This University of North Carolina site contains colonial to early 20th Century southern Literature and history including first person narratives. Slave narratives, Civil War home front and church in the southern black community.
• Gold Rush! Calilfornia's Untold Stories
  There are a variety of online exhibits here focusing on the environment, ethnic groups and women during the California Gold Rush which began in 1848. Life in the camps is explained through narratives and artifacts, both of which are carefully documented. There are various ways to navigate through the site depending on your area of interest.
• Making of America
  A collection of primary sources covering the ante-bellum period through the reconstruction. A joint venture by the University of Michigan and Cornell University.
• Uncle Tom's Cabin and American Culture: A Multimedia Archive
  A multimedia archive from the University of Virginia and the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center in Hartford, CT, this site contains images, films, audio and text describing not only the anti-slavery response to Stowe's book, Uncle Tom's Cabin but also the impact on the popular culture from 1830-1930. Use the "Interpret Mode" button for a timeline and overview essays.

Civil War

• Nineteenth Century Documents Project
  Primary source documents from some of the United States most notable events of the 19th century. Includes: editorials, the 1850 Statistical Almanac, civil war documents, letters, transcripts of debates, and a selection of related links for more information.
• African-American Women On-line Archival Collections
  Duke University manuscripts from its special collection library have been scanned and placed on line to give an unparalled look at African-American life during and after slavery. They are: Elizabeth Johnson Harris: Life Story, born in 1867 to former slaves, Vilet Lester Letter, 1857, and Hannah Valentine and Lethe Jackson: Slave Letters.
• The Valley of the Shadow: Two Communities in the American Civil War
  A University of Virginia site which tells the story of the Civil War as seen by the people of two communities, one northern and one southern, Franklin County, Pennsylvania and Augusta County, Virginia. The site contains letters and diaries, newspapers, church, military and public records, maps, and other primary sources.

• The African-American Mosaic
  A Library of Congress exhibition including the American Colonization Society to send freed slaves to Liberia, abolition, migration and materials from the WPA.
• Like a Family: The Making of a Southern Cotton Mill World
  Southern Oral History Program at the University of North Carolina has documented the change of life style and economy after the Civil War.

Gilded Age

• 1896: the presidential campaign--cartoons and commentary
  A Vassar history faculty member and several students produced this site which includes cartoons, platforms and background. A good example of use of the web as a teaching and learning tool.

  Southern Methodist University's interface lets you search or browse an alphabetical contents list. Advanced searching lets you search by keyword or [Library of Congress] subject heading. Some fine-tuning may be necessary, as a subject search for "propaganda" brought up "protective clothing."
• Navajo Code Talkers of World War II
  Department of Defense fact sheet with links to a Code Talkers Dictionary and Native American Medal of Honor winners.

• Foreign Relations of the United States 1945-1968
  The Office of the Historian of the U.S. Department of State has combined documents from the Truman through Johnson administrations from a variety of government sources. Only some are available online, and some external links may not work. See the librarian to find additional resources.
• Foreign Relations of the United States 1900-1918
  The University of Wisconsin has taken a different approach with FRUS and made an outstanding digitized database which can be searched for a single word, as well as browsed chronologically. Additional search forms for Boolean and Proximity searching.

  Part of the Library of Congress American Memory collection, there are 167 primary documents here, an easy-to-navigate interface, a timeline and more. Use the Learning Page for some critical thinking exercises on a variety of themes.
