Inherit the Wind WebquestMrs. Merrill: Honors English One
Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee’s play Inherit the Wind is, on its surface, a dramatization of the infamous 1925 trial of teacher John Scopes. At its heart, however, is the playwrights’ plea to a nation caught in the jaws of McCarthyism to recognize the dangers of inhibiting freedom of thought and expression.
This WebQuest, which follows the class reading and discussion of the play, will have students probing deeper into the fictional manifestations of the conflict and the real-life people and events that influenced the play.Clarence Darrow & William Jennings Bryan1925 – Dayton, TN courthouseCORBIS/Bettmann. “Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan during the trial.”Scopes Trial Home Page – UMKC School of Law. 30 October 2008.
