Mr. Cowie:

Odysseus and The Returning Soldier

DIRECTIONS:

As we have seen so far and will continue to see, Odysseus is a man with many strong qualities as well as human failings. Many modern soldiers returning from Afghanistan, Iraq or the Persian Gulf War are dealing with some real problems.

Read through the articles listed on this webpage. Choose one that contains a problem experienced by returning soldiers that Odysseus, as a counselor, would be able to help them with. READ THAT ARTICLE VERY CAREFULLY TO BECOME VERY FAMILIAR WITH ALL ASPECTS OF THE PROBLEM. In a very specific essay, discuss HOW and WHY Odysseus would be a good counselor for this particular problem.

In discussing this question be VERY SPECIFIC. Include the details that make up this problem using the article you have chosen. Be sure to use quotation marks if you quote directly, but direct quotes should be few if any. USE ODYSSEUS’ EXPERIENCES in The Odyssey to help explain HOW and WHY he would be a good counselor for this problem.

REQUIREMENTS:

1. An introductory paragraph in which you first mention that returning vets have problems created by their war experiences. Follow this by mentioning the problem and the article it comes from that you are going to be concentrating on in this essay. Finally, indicate that you are going to explain how Odysseus(include a couple of facts about him) would be a good counselor for those with this problem. (5-7 sentences)

2. The body: two paragraphs. In each paragraph begin by identifying one specific aspect of this problem in detail. Follow this up with one piece of advice Odysseus would give these men. Conclude by explaining why Odysseus would be qualified to dispense such advice. Each paragraph should be 12-15 sentences long.

3. A concluding paragraph in which you explain why it is vital for returning vets to deal with this problem. (5-7 sentences).
