iPad Buying Guide

iPad Buying Guide

Each freshman will be required to own an iPad with a minimum of 128 GB of memory (5th generation or newer) and a case with a keyboard.

Buying Information:

  • We recommend the newest iPad (6th Generation - supports Apple Pen). However, if students have an older generation iPad that meets the 128 GB and camera requirements, they will be allowed to use them. 3G/4G iPads are not needed. iPads that do have 3G/4G access will need to have that feature disabled while used at school.
  • Students must purchase a case with a keyboard. We recommend the Zagg Ultrathin or Portfolio keyboard cases. If students already have a keyboard case or personal preference, they are welcome to use it.
  • You can purchase the iPad from any Apple store, the online Apple Education store, or another authorized Apple retailer.
  • Care & Insurance: We strongly recommend that you purchase a case with a keyboard to protect your child’s iPad from accidental damage (see above). Additionally, CCHS recommends that you purchase insurance coverage for accidental damage. The device may be covered by a homeowner insurance policy, but repair costs for damage may not exceed the deductible. To pursue extra coverage, you can check with the retailer where you purchase the iPad or contact your family insurance agency or AppleCare+. We recommend you purchase AppleCare+
    • AppleCare+: In addition to providing coverage for up to two incidents of accidental damage ($49 service fee for each incident), AppleCare+ also includes software and technical support. Visit AppleCare+ for more details. The purchase price, which does not include the service fees, is $99.

Frequently Googled Questions

Will all CCHS students be required to have an iPad?

Yes. All students are required to have an iPad.

Will I have to purchase an iPad or will the school be leasing them?

The school will not be leasing iPads. Each student is required to purchase an iPad.

What type of iPad do I need to have?

Every freshman will be required to own an iPad with a camera and a minimum of 128 GB of memory, due to the size of digital textbooks. We recommend the newest iPad (6th Generation - supports Apple Pen). However, if you have an older generation that meets the 128GB and camera requirements, you can use it. You will also need a case and a keyboard for your iPad.

My child already has an iPad. Do I need to purchase a new one?

Your child may use the device as long as it meets the specifications listed above (128GB of memory with a camera).

Where do we purchase the iPad? Is there a discount for CCHS students through Apple for this program?

You can purchase the iPad from any Apple store, the online Apple Education store, or another authorized Apple retailer. Apple does not provide any educational discount for the iPad.

Is there anything else that I need to purchase with the iPad?

Students are required to have a case with a keyboard to protect your child’s iPad from accidental damage. We recommend the Zagg Ultrathin or Portfolio keyboard cases. If students already have a keyboard case or personal preference, they are welcome to use it.

What will the school do if my child’s iPad is damaged or stolen?

Each student is responsible for his/her iPad. As with any personal item of value, students are expected to secure these items in a school locker. It is strongly recommended that you purchase special insurance coverage to help cover the cost of an unrecoverable or damaged iPad.

Will families be responsible for buying apps used in class or will the school?

The school will provide a list of required apps to all students.

Do I need an iPad with 3G/4G or just WiFi?

WiFi is sufficient. You will be connecting to CCHS’s secure wireless network. If you have/purchase a 3G/4G iPad, you will be required to disable the connection while at CCHS.

Will there be any training for my student on how to use the iPad?

Yes, there will be opportunities during the summer, as well as in the freshman technology courses, for students to receive training.

Will the school block students from using certain apps or websites?

CCHS will filter the web content available to students through our wireless network. If a student has a 3G or 4G capable device on their iPad, it must be disabled while they are in school. Use of the 3G/4G connection outside of school hours is allowed.

Is there a student use policy for the iPad?

Yes - the CCHS iPad Acceptable Use Policy is updated periodically as needed.

Will students be required to purchase digital text books for their classes?

Yes, when required texts that are available in digital version cost significantly less than the printed version. CCHS will send out digital content lists over the summer with information on which iBooks, eBooks, Apps, and other digital content your child will need for classes as well as instructions on where and how you can acquire the content.

Will students receive help/support for the use of their iPad from the school?

If a student has an issue accessing the wireless network, the IT Department will help troubleshoot. If it’s a hardware/software issue, it will be up to the student to resolve with Apple.

Will CCHS install updates on the iPads?

No, it will be the responsibility of the student to update their own devices.

What email should students use to create an Apple ID?

Students should use their personal email addresses - NOT their student CCHSRaider.net Gmail accounts.
