The Five Pillars of Being Marist

The Five Pillars of Marist Identity were introduced by the Marist Province in 2015 as ideals to which all Marists, students and adults alike, should commit to.

The Marist Pillars are:

1. Presence… caring for each other, seeking relationships founded on love, being attentive and welcoming with a sense of openness
2. Simplicity… being straightforward and genuine, humble and modest, ‘doing good quietly’
3. Family Spirit… relating to each other as members of a loving family, building community, offering the warmth of welcoming, acceptance and belonging, sharing our successes and failures, setting clear standards of honesty, mutual respect, and tolerance
4. Love of Work… being generous of heart, constant, and persevering in our daily work, confident, visionary, decisive in meeting the needs of our community and encouraging each other to discover the dignity of our work with young people and with each other
5. In the Way of Mary… seeing Mary as a perfect model of being Marist, tender, strong, constant in faith, open to God’s calling us to our own journey of discipleship

About the Marist Chapter of the National Honor Society at Central Catholic

The purpose of the NHS is to give students with strong academics, character, leadership, and service a chance to help the school and the greater community. Sophomores and Juniors who are academically eligible at the end of the school year are invited over the summer to apply at the beginning of the next academic year (induction in the Fall). Academically eligible students must have completed their Marist Service and be able to demonstrate leadership and character in the school and in the community. NHS members provide tutoring in the Academic Success Center and service to CCHS and the neighboring communities.

The National Honor Society Induction for New Members will be held on Wednesday, October 22, 2025 (updated date). Rising juniors and rising seniors will be notified over the summer by email of their eligibility to apply for membership in the NHS at CCHS.

Through the University of Rochester, the Bausch and Lomb Science Award is presented to a junior who has demonstrated excellence in the sciences while enrolled in a rigorous curriculum. University of Rochester Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award

Through the University of Rochester, the Frederick Douglas & Susan B. Anthony Award is given to a student who has demonstrated excellence in their social studies/ humanities courses throughout high school. Additionally, this honor is awarded to a student who demonstrates leadership potential and is dedicated to community action. This honor is presented to:

University of Rochester George Eastman Young Leaders Award

Through the University of Rochester, the George Eastman Young Leaders Award is awarded to a student who has demonstrated strong leadership and extracurricular involvement while experiencing a high level of academic achievement while enrolled in a rigorous curriculum. This year’s recipient is:

University of Rochester Xerox Award for Innovation and Information Technology

Through the University of Rochester, the Xerox Innovation and Technology Award is given to a student with a strong interest in information technology and who has demonstrated progressive thought and high achievement in this area. This award is presented to:

Western New England University Book Award

Western New England University Book Award honors a junior student for outstanding academic achievement, exceptional character, and significant personal contributions to both Central Catholic and the community at large. This honor is presented to:

Worcester Polytechnic Institute Innovation Award

The WPI Innovation Award is presented to a junior who has displayed exceptional academic achievement in a rigorous curriculum with a focus on coursework in the sciences, technology, engineering, or mathematics. This recipient has a strong ability to collaborate, innovate, and problem solve and has made positive contributions to their school environment and leads by example. This award is presented to:

Endowed Scholarship Awards

The Baroni Family Fine & Performing Arts Scholarship

Gino Baroni '74 and his family, generous friends of Central Catholic, have established the Baroni Family Fine & Performing Arts Scholarship. In Gino's words, "My wife and daughters introduced me to that side of my brain about 30 years ago and I have come to appreciate the efforts and talent that arise from these programs, especially at the high school level." This scholarship is presented to a junior who demonstrates great personal promise and is an "unsung" artist in the Fine & Performing Arts program.

The Dr. George D. LeMaitre '51 Award for Excellence in Math & Science

Dr. George LeMaitre '51 devoted his life to medical research and science. Because of his love and devotion to Central Catholic, he has endowed a scholarship to reward two top achieving students who have demonstrated excellence in math and science.

The Richard G. Larnard Service Award

Eric Larnard '95 and his family have created and endowed the Richard G. Larnard Service Award in honor of Eric's father, Richard. This scholarship is awarded to a rising junior who has demonstrated faith-filled service to those in need, demonstrates understated humility in their actions, and has completed all of their service requirements for graduation.

The Mary Ruffino Trust Scholarship

The Mary Ruffino Trust Scholarship is presented to a student who has a high level of interest in engineering and science.

The Emelio Cretella Award for Oral & Written Communication

The Emilio Cretella Award is given by Dr. Henry Cretella '57 in honor of Mr. Warren Hayes '54. It is awarded to a member of the junior class for excellence in written and oral communication.

• 2026 Recipient: Kaleigh Davoli '27

 

The Barbara D. Caruso Writing Scholarship

The Barbara D. Caruso Writing Scholarship was established by her family to honor her legacy. Barbara and her husband Alex were active, supportive members of the CCHS Family with all three of their children attending: Dominique '03, Stephanie '06, and Alessandra '09. The Award is presented to a talented and imaginative writer who has exhibited unwavering determination and resilience in achieving their goals.

The Dr. Thomas Vanderspurt '63 Memorial Scholarship

Mrs. Maureen Vanderspurt has established a scholarship in memory of her late husband, Dr. Thomas Henry Vanderspurt '63. The Dr. Thomas Henry Vanderspurt Memorial Fund is awarded to a student who has demonstrated an exceptional proclivity for Chemistry.

The Ryan Driscoll '20 Memorial Scholarship

The Ryan Driscoll '20 Memorial Scholarship was established by teammates, friends, and the family of Ryan Driscoll to honor the memory of this special young man who fully embraced his Central Catholic experience. Ryan was an exceptional student, a member of the Ice Hockey and Lacrosse teams and was taken from us tragically in a car accident prior to the start of his senior year. The Ryan Driscoll Scholarship is given to a rising senior who exemplifies the best qualities of Ryan.

The Brendan O'Rourke Memorial Scholarship

The Brendan O'Rourke Memorial Scholarship was recently established by the family & friends of Brendan O'Rourke. This scholarship is awarded to a rising senior who has an interest in majoring in Criminal Justice and demonstrates strong academic promise.

• 2026 Recipient: Marissa Chandler '27

 

The Barbara Sweeney Memorial Scholarship

The Barbara Sweeney Memorial Scholarship has been established by Attorney Michael Sweeney '83 in honor and memory of his mother Barbara. Given to a female from the city of Lawrence who desires to study in a STEM or medical/health field in college, this scholarship required applicants to have a very strong academic record and write a short essay on a prompt from writer Anna Quindlen, who stated she "majored in unafraid: in college."

The Honorable Kevin J. Sullivan '76 Scholarship

The Hon. Kevin J. Sullivan '76 Scholarship is awarded to a rising senior at Central Catholic High School who reflects the quiet strength, integrity, and commitment to others that defines Kevin’s life and legacy as a public servant and former Mayor of Lawrence. This scholarship honors a student who embodies the values of service, character, and community - someone who makes a meaningful difference in the lives of others, often behind the scenes.
