Beyond the Classroom: The Wall That Heals

Beyond the Classroom: The Wall That Heals

Last week, students in Central Catholic's AP English Literature Course visited The Wall That Heals, a traveling exhibit on display in Methuen that features a three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial along with a mobile Education Center.

The students visited The Wall That Heals after reading and discussing The Things They Carried by novelist Tim O’Brien based on his experiences during the Vietnam War.

The Things They Carried

The book is a collection of linked short stories about a platoon of American soldiers fighting in the Vietnam War.

The classwork and exhibit brought together literature, history, ethics, and humanity.

The AP English Literature course is taught by Mr. Michael Clements '94, the Chair of the English Department.

About AP English Literature & Composition (Course #255)

AP English Literature is an accelerated literary studies course designed to foster critical analysis and critical writing at the college level. Students will analyze texts from a variety of historical time periods (medieval age to 21st Century), cultural genres (British, American, Russian, Latino), and literary forms (novel, short story, drama, poetry).

Focusing on techniques fiction writers use to create meaning, students will progress their analysis beyond a study of theme to a study of literary technique. Students will demonstrate learning through contributions to class discussions and through a variety of writing assignments and literature tests.

While students will continue to write analysis essays outside of class, a heavy emphasis is placed on the in-class, on-demand essay. Students must be prepared to read several hours a week to complete course assignments. This course is best suited for students who enjoy analyzing, discussing, and writing about challenging, thought-provoking (and, sometimes, lengthy) texts.

Thank you to Mr. Michael Clements and our outstanding faculty and staff for offering learning opportunities that bring together literature, history, ethics, and humanity.
