Player and coach with player holding trophy

"We are really proud of Javi. He’s a special player. What makes him so great is he allows us to coach him hard. He is a great teammate and is the epitome of what you want in a basketball player."

Top of the Class: Lopez greatness at Central Catholic extends far past basketball court, Dec. 20, 2025

Excerpt from article, quote from Mr. Christopher Sullivan '81, Director of Marist Mission

"If Javi had never picked up a basketball, he still would have made an incredible impact on the Central Community. He works incredibly hard in the classroom. He is loved by his teammates and respected by his teachers. Most importantly, he is kind to the younger students and looks out for them. That being said, we are very happy that he plays hoop, too."

What Makes Central Catholic Special

"The family that I’m apart of is nothing short of special, and I am blessed by the Man above to be in the position that I am in today. I thank Central for welcoming an inner-city kid and taking a chance on me. I don’t know where I would be without this school and the people in it."

On Service and the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence

"I did most of my community service hours at the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence. It hit home for me because growing up it was always like a second home to me and somewhere I could go where people really cared about me. It was a full circle moment when those staff and the youth there came out to support me and watch me score my 1000th point. It was very impactful and moving for me."

Faculty Mentors

"I have many teachers that I have developed meaningful relationships with but a few that come to mind would be Mr. Grella (Mr. Sully Grella '92, Math Teacher), Ms. Given [Ms. Lanie (Jowett '12) Given, Science Teacher], Mr. Sullivan (Mr. Chris Sullivan '81, Director of Marist Mission), and Coach Adamopoulos (Mr. Charles Adamopoulos, Business Teacher)."

"The special part about them is they know my personally, not just as a student or athlete, and I appreciate that more than they know."

His Future

"I look forward to playing in college in the UAA or in the NE10. I'm excited what the next level has in store for me."
