Overcoming Adversity with Remarkable Resilience

Overcoming Adversity with Remarkable Resilience

Congratulations to Rachel Asasira '26, who has been awarded the Christian A. Herter Memorial Scholarship! Rachel is one of just 25 students statewide who was selected for this prestigious scholarship.

This scholarship, which is presented to students in Massachusetts who have overcome major adversity and shown outstanding academic promise, will provide up to 50% of all expenses at the college or university of her choice.

"Rachel is an exceptional student who has consistently demonstrated remarkable character, academic excellence, and leadership throughout her high school career," states her School Counselor, Dr. Evelyn Hidalgo.

"As a first-generation college student, Rachel embodies the qualities of faith, resilience, and dedication that will serve her well. Her calm demeanor and friendly smile is her superpower! I have learned so much from her humbleness and positive outlook and I am truly excited to see her flourish in her future endeavors. "

About The Christian A. Herter Memorial Scholarship

The Christian A. Herter Memorial Scholarship Program was established in 1972 by the Massachusetts State Legislature to recruit students in the 10th and 11th grades whose socio-economic backgrounds and environmental conditions may inhibit their ability to attain educational goals. The students that are selected for this program must have overcome major adversity in their lives.

Massachusetts students who demonstrate academic promise and desire to attend post-secondary institutions may receive up to 50% of their calculated need at the college of their choice within the continental United States.

Faculty Mentors

Several staff members have had a meaningful impact on my experience at CCHS, including

  • Ms. Hidalgo (Dr. Evelyn Hidalgo, School & College Counselor), who has provided ongoing guidance throughout my high school career;
  • Mr. Murray (Mr. Andrew Murray, Principal) who has supported me and my family as we’ve navigated different life circumstances;
  • Mrs. Shanahan (Mrs. Maureen Shanahan, Concert Choir & Central Harmony Director) who has encouraged me to gain more confidence in my voice through singing.

The Future

"I plan to pursue a pre-med track in college and hope to one day become a physician."
