Faculty Member James O’Neill Receives Excellence in Education Award

Faculty Member James O’Neill Receives Excellence in Education Award

The Archdiocese of Boston Catholic Schools Office, with support from the Catholic Schools Foundation, recently announced Mr. James (Jim) O’Neill - faculty member in the Religious Studies Department at CCHS - as a recipient of the prestigious Archdiocese of Boston Excellence in Education Award. This annual award honors elementary and secondary school teachers' commitment to developing saints and scholars in the Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Boston.

Mr. O’Neill will receive $1,500 and be honored at a luncheon in May with Cardinal Seán O'Malley and Superintendents of Archdiocese of Boston Catholic Schools Kathy Mears and Thomas Carroll.

About James O’Neill

Mr. James (Jim) O’Neill is a veteran teacher in his 41st year at Central Catholic High School. Mr. O’Neill teaches religion, but he is also active in many areas of the school such as leading week-long mission trips through the school’s Project Rebuild program, serving as a newspaper moderator, starting a Global Awareness Program with the MaryKnoll missionaries, and leading the Rod and Garden Club on a fishing trip. He was also the coach for Central Catholic's Indoor and Outdoor Track teams for 18 years. In addition to clubs and sports in the past, he currently participates on the Lay Faculty Negotiation Team.

Mr. O'Neill was nominated by a colleague, who described him as a “real, genuine person among students and his colleagues. He is caring, compassionate, and selfless.” As a religious studies teacher, Mr. O'Neill gives students an opportunity for reflection, but also holds students to high academic standards, encouraging them to excel in the subject area. His religious studies classes have become a safe place for discussion, reflection, and academic learning.

Administrators, staff, pastors, parents and students were encouraged to nominate excellent teachers in their schools. The Excellence in Education Award's selection committee, comprised of past recipients of the award and members of the Catholic Schools Office, read all nominations and interviewed the finalists to identify 10 exemplary educators. The committee received more than 120 nominations for excellent teachers in the Archdiocese of Boston.
